Jerry Sandusky is in the news again this week. Something about asking for his right to a pension from Penn State University.
And then there is the Subway guy. Jared Fogle. He was also making the headlines again as his sentencing is approaching.
Lastly, dare I even mention Bill Cosby? I’ve lost count of the number of his accusers that have stepped forward. So many. Too many.
Disgust is all over my face right now as I type their names.
These are all men who used their position of influence, fame and power to sexually abuse others. They created a wake of victims that were too terrified of the repercussions or reliving the pain to make an accusation (at least not until decades later in some cases) against such powerful and well-known men.
Anyone who is a victim of a sexual crime knows, no matter how many years after the incident or incidents, there are always triggers that return those memories to the forefront. Sometimes it is a song, or a physical location, or a movie that hits too close to home. Counseling helps. Self-help books help. Support groups help. For each victim the healing passage is different.
The Blooming of the Lotus is a beautiful book about the journey of a survivor of incest. Author Robin Lynn Brooks is that survivor and has truly opened her heart into the pages of her memoir. She is a published poet and playwright, and her art has traveled nationwide. She has a Masters in Sculpture from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her last body of work, entitled Earth Mothers, is a grouping of life-size and larger women made of earth. She is also a book designer.
The Blooming of the Lotus: Survivors often feel alone in their experiences, with emotions that linger long after the trauma is over. As a survivor of incest, Robin Lynn Brooks understands the feelings. In her ground-breaking poetic memoir, The Blooming of the Lotus, she takes you on her deeply personal journey of healing. Traveling into the abyss of her past, exploring the depths of her experiences with brutal incest, violence, and torture, she journeys on her awe-inspiring quest to uncover her authentic self. The book will strike a cord with survivors, lending hope that even the deepest, darkest pit of despair can be opened to the light.
