My neighbor is retiring next week after working for the same company for more than thirty years. Something that just doesn’t happen frequently with the younger generation. His loyalty and work ethic are traits of his age bracket as well as his personality.

His first retirement plan is to sleep in later and then to start hiking and bowling again. Sounds great, but he also realizes even with his retirement income, he’ll need to work part-time for a few more years. I worry about how he will find the ideal job in this day and age. He doesn’t use social media, uses a computer only to answer emails, and is a pretty shy individual – networking probably doesn’t come naturally to him.

There are two books I would like to give him for a retirement present. The first is one about Colorado’s hiking trails. The second is Over 50 and Motivated – A Job Search Book for Job Seekers over 50 by Brian E. Howard. When he’s ready, this book will help prepare him for today’s job market and show him how to prove his worth to hiring managers.

Networking Made Easy

I’m shy. I’ll be the first to admit it. When I meet new people, especially in a group setting, I really have to pull my shoestrings up tight and remind myself that other people are nervous too. And that they are there for the same reason: to make connections, meet new people and share information. And I also have to remember that they aren’t vampires trying to suck the life out of me just by making conversation. (just kidding) (kinda)

But seriously, sometimes there is that one person at a party or business event that seems to float around the room with ease. You know who I’m talking about. Someone who remembers the names of everyone they meet, who introduces people with common interests and then moves on to introduce others, who is so confident and sincere they bring everyone up with them and the event is a shining success. I’m not exactly sure, and it certainly isn’t natural for me, but I’m trying. Just this morning I went to a networking meeting with a group of writers and I forced myself (out of my comfort zone) to sit next to someone new. Guess what? After we talked a bit, I decided that I had a lot in common with this woman. We traded cards and each have some future projects we can help each other out with.
