eggsSummer is finally here. The kids had their last day of school, the freezer is full of popsicles and we live between layers of sunscreen and bug spray.

Summer is also the season of picnics and potlucks. For these, I almost always make deviled eggs. Several reasons: my kids love them, they are relatively easy to make, I usually have the ingredients on-hand, and on a table of options, when my kids grab them, at least they will have some protein on their plate next to their pile of cookies and fruit salad.

But perhaps I need to vary from my old standby. My friends know me so well that a group invite recently read, RSVP with your dish (Holly has the deviled eggs covered). For Christmas another friend gave me a special deviled egg tray that has a frozen layer to keep the eggs chilled. Perfect. But, still, maybe it is time to try something new.

If you’re stuck in a food rut, here are several cookbooks that will tempt your taste buds to experiment.

cookbook-390x600This is Book 4 in The Family Caregiver’s Series. The books in this series are designed to support you, the family caregiver, which in turn will help you be supportive to your loved one.

You’re in the caregiving trenches and barely make it through the day, let alone have the energy to prepare fancy meals. But meals don’t have to be fancy or hard to make in order to be delicious, nutritious, and healthy. Harriet Hodgson, a dedicated home cook, former food writer, and family caregiver, wanted to fix delicious meals for her disabled husband. A creative cook, Harriet adapted favorite family recipes and created new ones for this book, reducing salt, fat, and sugar.Personal stories add to the recipes and each one ends with “Caregiver Tips.” You’ll get tips on how to stock your pantry, speed shop for groceries, understand the effects of sodium, and practice food safety.

The book is set in larger print that makes it easy to read. Treat your loved one—and yourself—to these easy-fix, delicious, and satisfying recipes. Make every meal a celebration of life!

PrintYes, that’s my family on the cover—all ten of us! We had to get creative to include two of our sons who were out of the state and country. I thought it was rather a genius idea, from my eldest daughter, to blow up their photos so they wouldn’t be left out of my home cooking cookbook. That’s how our family rolls: creative, spontaneous, and make-it-happen. In fact, that’s how my recipes in this cookbook came about!

As I was preparing meals at home, I might find that I was missing an ingredient to a recipe, wanted to improve one I’d tried, or was inspired by something I found on sale at the market. I think it was the artistic side of me that I’d not expressed since art school that found another outlet through my cooking. As our family continued to grow through adoption, it was up to me to stretch the dollars and fill the stomachs. That meant fresh food made at home. No drive-thrus for this family! So come along with me and cruise through these recipes, memories, and more. I think you’ll discover what my family and friends have enjoyed for years: delicious food, happy palates, and the wish that you had enough for leftovers!

My First Lightening Bug

I’ve been fortunate enough in my life to have traveled quite a bit, but there are definitely still many items on my bucket list. A hot air balloon ride, seeing a mountain lion and soaking in the natural hot springs of Iceland are big things I can’t wait to do someday. But there are little things too. And this week I was able to cross one of them off my list.

I saw my first lightening bug. Tons of them actually. We were in Michigan for a family reunion walking from the beach to the cabin at dusk and there they were. Every bush was covered with the blinky little lights. They zipped higher each time we reached for them. Just out of reach, they would zap again and dart a different direction. Such mystery they hold.

It was the first time my kids had seen them as well and we all were jumping around pointing and shushing each other. They really are amazing.

The lightening bugs immediately brought this book to mind with its beautiful glowing cover. The author (R. E. Munzing) grew up in Michigan, so I can only imaging the fun of the lightening bug kind of nights he must have also experienced. If you have a tween, this is a read that will give them that summer adventure kind of feel:

Firefly-Front-Cover-398x600Beyond the Firefly Field by R. E. Munzing: By the time he was fourteen, Clayton Curtis realized his whole life would be boring. Living in a middle-of-nowhere piece of the country would have been boring enough, but it was also the land that time forgot. Due to inherit the family home passed down through many generations, Clayton felt doomed to a life in the stone age.

Everything changed when a new subdivision was built a mile from his house. With scrap wood, he and his friends built a large tree house complex. From high in the tree, they saw a glowing faraway field one night and were determined to find out what it was. What they discovered there was beyond epically wonderful, and the boys knew it must be kept secret. They quickly became obsessed with going to see it often, even though being there was changing them and herding them toward a decision they didn’t want to make. They would soon either have to be willing to do whatever was necessary to keep the secret or never go there again.

Hold-on-to-Summer Reads

So maybe the kids are going back to school and schedules are picking up again now that the summer months are waning, and maybe we are gearing up to enjoy some changing leaves and we’re on the edge of our seats for when Starbucks releases the pumpkin spice latte (oh, is that just me?). But let’s not be fooled–we still have a full month of summer left. And we shouldn’t give it up so easily!

You Can't Iron a Wrinkled Birthday Suit

A little humor and zany adventure goes a long way in Sharon Phennah’s You Can’t Iron a Wrinkled Birthday Suit.

Cast Net Cover v.4

PrintDo romance mysteries really get your summer gears rolling? Millie West has two great go-to titles, The Cast Net and Catherine’s Cross. Plus, since they’re both set in southern states, you can probably get away with reading these well into the fall months.

Destination DWith schools starting back, maybe you’re feeling nostalgic about your old college days. Don’t get weepy–grab Destination D by Lori Beard Daily and get wrapped up in a good tale about three college friends.

If that one doesn’t do it for you, try Anytime Soon by Tamika Anytime Soon Cover v.15Christy. With a character getting ready to graduate college and facing all the challenges that time in life brings, you might not be feeling so weepy any more.

tropic squallYou know what the end of summer means: hurricane season. What better to read than Tropic Squall by Ben Cherot, a story that takes place not only during a hurricane but also on a ship! It doesn’t get much more action packed than that…

Ameera UnveiledKathleen Varn‘s Ameera Unveiled will get you inspired to start a new hobby this fall (summer is way too hot for motivation). Maybe you’ll choose belly dancing?

None of these whet your whistle? Let us know what you’re favorite last-chance summer read is.
