My husband’s cousin, Karen, is having a hard time taking care of her elderly parents right now. Between both parents, there is a knee replacement, a hip replacement, kidney failure and newly diagnosed lung cancer. Caring for aging parents is difficult and exhausting, both physically and mentally. In addition to her own full-time job, she is also caught in the quandary between helping them continue living at home, hiring in-home care or choosing an expensive live-in nursing facility.

With all these decisions I know that Karen doesn’t take care of herself very well. When is there time, right?

So, as soon as it is available on October 7, 2015, this is the perfect book for her:

caregiveraffirmationsAbout Affirmations for a Family Caregiver: Caregiving can be difficult, even on its best days, and staying upbeat is one of the most loving things that a caregiver can do for the care receiver—the person they provide care for and love so much. Reading affirmations is a quick and easy form of self-care that can help caregivers stay balanced and optimistic, which lends itself to a calm, healing environment.

This book of affirmations has been created specifically for caregivers and is grouped into chapters with titles that caregivers understand: caregiving tasks, safeguarding health, appreciating the day. . . which makes it easy to flip right to the section that offers the support that is needed at that moment. At the end of the book, author Harriet Hodgson provides guidance on how to write affirmations for those who want to go just a step farther.

If you know someone who is also in a caregiver role, this just might be a very compassionate gift for them. Deliver this book (along with a casserole for dinner) and they will appreciate it and know they are loved. Here are other books by Harriett Hodgson that make wonderful gifts as well:
